1849 Dolley Madison dies in Washington on July 12.
1849 Dolley Madison is buried in a public vault at Congressional Cemetery.
1852 Payne Todd dies and is interred at Congressional Cemetery on January 18.
1852 Dolley Madison’s remains are moved to the Causten Vault.
1858 Dolley Madison’s body is removed from Congressional Cemetery to be
buried at Montpelier beside her husband.
James Madison, the Legacy
1938 The State Teacher’s College at Harrisonburg, Virginia, is renamed Madi-
son College.
1977 Madison College becomes James Madison University.
1983 Marion Scott Dupont, the last private owner of the original Madison estate,
bequeaths Montpelier to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
1999 JMU creates the James Madison Center.
2001 Efforts around the nation observe the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of
James Madison’s birth.
2004 Congress officially recognizes September 17 as Constitution Day, and all
public educational institutions are required by law to conduct lessons or
activities for students to commemorate the day.
2008 The restored Montpelier reopens to the public on Constitution Day with a
gala celebration featuring remarks by Chief Justice John Roberts.
2009 The two hundredth anniversary of James Madison’s inauguration as the
nation’s fourth president is recognized.
