Family Weekend’s classroom with a world view
This October, JMU parents who trekked to campus for Family Weekend got to do more than tour campus, cheer on the Dukes and
scare their child into cleaning his dorm room. For the first time, parents were invited to sit in on one of their son or daughter’s
Friday classes (read about Kathy LaMar’s day in class on Page 59). Many parents also chose to visit JMU’s Science on a Sphere
exhibit and see the world through the eyes of an astronaut. Imagine gazing upon Earth as you are suspended in orbit 22,000
miles above its surface. JMU is the first university to acquire Science on a Sphere, a sphere-shaped, data visualization tool that
was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. JMU is using Science on a Sphere for environmental
and educational research and for cross-disciplinary collaborations. See more photos at www.jmu.edu/news/Science-Sphere/
