Beyond the
Great Wall
Lions, origami and calligraphy,
oh my! A traditional Chinese
Lion Dance opened festivities
for JMU’s 2008 International
Week, held Sept. 21–26. The
Office of International Programs
and Center for Multicultural
Student Services helped students
travel to “China: Beyond
the Great Wall” with this year’s
International Week theme. The
Lion Dance has its origins in
ancient times and is used to
bring good luck and prosperity.
Throughout the week, students
and other participants tested
their skills at origami, calligraphy
and Asian geography. Other
events included a Study Abroad
fair, a traditional Chinese music
concert, a Taste of China dinner,
a photo contest and an international
bazaar. International Week
is one of JMU’s marquee events
to celebrate campus diversity
and cultural acceptance. All
International Week events are
open to the Harrisonburg community,
which is also rich in
many languages and cultures.
