Founding Fathers
Virginia Indian history celebrated
think you know about all of Virginia’s Founding
Fathers? the Madison art Collection and
the College of education celebrated Virginia’s
rich indian history and culture with the grand
opening ceremony for the exhibit Beyond Jamestown:
Virginia Indians Yesterday and Today. on
sept. 20, Virginia tribal leaders,
native-american scholars,
dancers and artisans shared
Virginia’s indian heritage at
the Festival Conference and
student Center. artisans and
dancers also shared traditional
dances and art on the Festival
lawn with students, community
members and guests.
“this special event is the
story of Virginia indians told
by Virginia indians,” says Melanie
Brimhall with the Madison
art Collection.

and Today is on display through dec. 5
at the gallery at Festival, room 2104 in
the Festival Conference and student Center.
the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities
funded the exhibit through the Virginia
indian Heritage Program.

“Madison art Collection events and programs support both
K-12 and JMU undergraduate education programs,” adds
Brimhall. “we welcome early childhood education students,
K-12 teachers and anyone who
just wants to learn.”

culture and history lecture, “native
americans from sea to shining
sea,” on nov. 12 at the Festival. M
