Alumni awards tap general,
teacher and chapter leader

Distinguished alumni
awards during a breakfast
ceremony at Homecoming
2007. an army general, a longtime
alumni chapter leader and a special
education teacher were honored.
Brig. Gen. Raymond Mason (’78)
was awarded the 2007 Ronald E.
Carrier Distinguished alumni achievement
award. The award recognizes an individual
who has excelled in his respective field and
attained recognition by other professionals
or peers. Mason’s most recent command
supported 37,000 troops in Korea. His current
command, in Hawaii, began last fall.

the centennial
challenge?
the alumni “centennial
challenge” is next weekend,
march 15-16. the challenge,
kicked off by the tidewater
alumni chapter, is intended
those who have given of themselves for the
enrichment of others and the betterment
of their communities. Jones, a co-founder
of the highly successful chapter CrabFest
events, was nominated for her tireless efforts
to keep the JMU spirit alive in
the Richmond area.
Lisa Melroy (’94, ’95M), a special
education teacher at Swift
Creek Middle School in Midlothian,
was awarded the inaugural
JMU Distinguished alumni award
for Teaching. The award honors
JMU’s heritage and the founding
principles of the State Normal
and Industrial School for Women
at Harrisonburg. Graduates with exemplary
classroom teaching records in pre-K
through 12th grade are honored. award
winners must have shown — by spirit and
professionalism — to be outstanding in his
or her field, and they must have at least five
years of teaching experience. M
